The practical distinction

The nominal reach is conditional on an optical link meeting specified requirements. Two routes of equal length can have different loss and dispersion. A short route can also overload a receiver. Base acceptance on measurements and the complete optical budget rather than kilometers alone.

  • SFP-10G-ZR is a 10G single-mode, duplex-LC, nominal 1550 nm optic with a documented long-reach application. It must not be assigned 100G ZR parameters.
  • Distance alone does not account for connectors, splices, patching, fiber loss or engineering margin.
  • Both weak received power and receiver overload require evaluation. Any attenuation must follow the actual transmitter and receiver specifications.

Collect the fiber route and loss measurements, then calculate the full link budget against the exact optics. Include connector and splice loss and a justified reserve. Check dispersion and relevant operating limits as documented for the selected parts.
