The practical distinction

A speed label summarizes throughput. It does not encode cage geometry, electrical lanes, media or supported host software. A CXP module cannot be substituted with QSFP28 merely because both are described as 100G.

What the product details tell you

  • N5696-M4C uses CXP; it is not a QSFP28 port module. Equal aggregate rates do not establish a compatible plug or electrical interface.
  • N5696-M12Q support depends on the intended Nexus host. Check the installation guide and software for the exact combination.
  • N2K-C2232TM-E is a Fabric Extender, not an independent stand-alone switch. Maximum chassis port counts may depend on optional modules.

Applying it to a project

Record the current host, expansion modules, Fabric Extenders and uplinks. Check compatibility before changing the topology. Stage the target configuration and preserve the original image and cabling plan for rollback.
