Reusing Nexus 3172TQ-XL: copper servers, optical uplinks and support dates

Review copper access, the separate optical uplink and the actual support scope.

A legacy switch can still provide the required physical ports while its support timeline no longer matches a new project’s operating horizon. Evaluate both before reusing it.

The short answer

Consider this platform only where its copper server interfaces, uplink design and lifecycle fit the specific reuse plan. Select the optical uplink by the actual fiber path, and verify support eligibility for the offered unit separately.

Separate the 48 10GBASE-T ports and six QSFP+ ports in the reuse plan, then review the channel and current support entitlements. Conceptual illustration; equipment shapes are illustrative.

What the technical reference establishes

Cisco’s hardware guide describes the 3172TQ-XL as a copper-access platform with QSFP+ uplinks. Its lifecycle notice sets separate dates for software maintenance, security remedies, service renewal and final support.

For an installed rack, the useful question is whether a documented period of reuse is justified. Working hardware, an advertised replacement unit and an eligible support entitlement are different forms of evidence.

Cisco Nexus 3172TQ lifecycle notice

Server interface — Access ports are RJ45 copper, not single-mode fiber inputs.

Uplink role — QSFP+ supports specified native or breakout modes.

Security milestone — The notice ends vulnerability/security support on 24 February 2025.

Final support — The notice lists 28 February 2027, subject to entitlement.

Scope of the analysis: Independent engineering analysis of official documentation. The design exercises are illustrative; this guide does not describe a customer deployment.

Work through the engineering choices

Start with the documented constraint, then state the conditions for the proposed equipment role.

Decide the permitted reuse period

Cisco publishes different lifecycle milestones for the base platform.

Design exercise: Design exercise: retain an existing rack while preparing a later switch refresh.

Write down the planned removal date and the support or vulnerability-remediation requirement for that interval. As of this review, the security-support milestone has passed and the final-support date is approaching. A final-support date should not be presented as a promise of new security fixes.

Confirm the actual unit’s entitlement and replacement arrangements. The suffix on a reseller listing does not establish a transferable contract, current vendor certification or physical condition. Keep the offered serial-dependent support response and agreed condition with the quote rather than assuming that the lifecycle notice covers every unit identically.

Match the servers to the copper access ports

The hardware guide identifies 48 10GBASE-T RJ45 interfaces.

Design exercise: Design exercise: retain copper-connected production NICs without changing the rack’s media plan.

Inventory which servers use 10GBASE-T and which require optical SFP+ or higher-rate interfaces. A fiber patch panel cannot terminate directly on this switch’s RJ45 access ports. If a server media change is part of the refresh, treat the NIC, cable and replacement switch as one new endpoint design.

Check the installed software, port configuration and environmental bundle before reuse. Include power-supply and airflow requirements in any replacement-unit order. Keeping the same base model reduces some migration work, but it does not prove that an uninspected unit has the same configuration, software or operating condition.

Choose the 40G channel independently

The platform provides QSFP+ uplink interfaces.

Design exercise: Conditional choice: a duplex single-mode or a parallel multimode optical uplink.

Trace the installed channel before choosing between LR4 and SR4. The different media and equipment-facing interfaces are not substitutes merely because both options carry 40G. Verify the exact module and software support against the selected host; a historical matrix entry is useful context, not certification of the offered replacement unit.

Reserve uplink ports for the actual redundancy and traffic requirement before assigning any to breakout. Record both peers and the failover plan. A collection of spare ports or spare fibers is not evidence that service survives a switch, path or power failure; validate the particular failure condition the reuse design is meant to cover.

Before you finalize the channel

Is last support the same as security support?

No. The notice assigns them different milestones.

Does an RF suffix prove the offered unit has vendor support?

No. Confirm condition, source and entitlement for the actual unit.

Can its RJ45 ports connect directly to single-mode fiber?

No. They are copper Ethernet access interfaces.

Does an optical module’s 40G label prove it fits the uplink?

No. Check media, host, software, peer and channel together.
