Choosing the Right BlueField-3 DPU or SuperNIC

Start with the workload and exact model
BlueField-3 includes DPUs and SuperNICs with different resources. The B3210L and B3220L variants in this set are E-Series SuperNICs with eight Arm cores and 16 GB DDR5. B3210E is an E-Series DPU with 16 Arm cores and 32 GB DDR5. B3220 and B3240 are P-Series DPUs with 16 Arm cores and 32 GB DDR5. A family name alone is therefore too broad for a server bill of materials.
Select bandwidth and default protocol deliberately
B3210E and B3210L are listed for 100GbE or HDR100; B3220 and B3220L for 200GbE or NDR200. These models default to Ethernet. B3240 is listed for 400GbE or NDR and defaults to InfiniBand. Confirm the protocol and supported port configuration at both ends before choosing cables. A connector shape does not establish every supported speed.
Keep crypto and cooling variants separate
Crypto-enabled and crypto-disabled codes are distinct orderable configurations. For B3240, the AB0 variants use a dual-slot FHHL arrangement; 900-9D3B6-00CN-PA0 is the single-slot version specified for cold-aisle servers. The source documentation also separates DDR transfer-rate details by model and hardware revision. Record the complete order code and actual revision in the qualification record.
Check power and extension support before procurement
B3240, B3220 and B3210E require an additional 8-pin PCIe power connection, and that cable is not in the ordinary card package. The cited SuperNICs instead have a minimum 75 W slot-supply requirement. Do not choose a power cable by connector fit alone: use the server-qualified wiring and NVIDIA installation instructions. Some DPUs expose an x16 PCIe extension option, while the current introduction warns that Socket Direct is not supported by firmware. Verify the intended mode against the active firmware release before promising the feature.
Qualification checklist
Capture the OPN, crypto requirement, DPU versus SuperNIC role, host slot, slot occupancy, power cable, cooling direction, optics, firmware PSID and hardware revision. Use the public specification as the reference and actual unit evidence to establish what will be delivered.
